How do you check Insurance, MOT Test Certificates and GVT Test Certificates? When you apply for a tax disc online or by using our telephone service, the vehicle's insurance will be electronically checked with the Motor Insurance Database (MID), run by the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) MoT Certificates and GVT Certificates will also be checked electronically with the MoT Database. Customers with a new style MoT Certificate or GVT Certificate are only eligible to use this service. You can find more information about the new style MoT Certificates by visiting the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) website at Why is there an additional charge for using a credit card? The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is increasing the ways in which customers can pay tax. Anyone taxing online or over the phone can now pay by credit card. The charge levied by credit card companies for this facility will be passed on to the customer. Following a public consultation exercise on a number of different options, a flat rate charge for credit card payments was chosen. The £2.50 charge covers the costs incurred by the Agency for providing this service. Debit card payments will remain free of charge. Other payment methods including paying by cash, cheque or debit card for Post Office® and DVLA local office applicants will still be available and remain free of charge. What address is the tax disc or SORN confirmation letter sent to? The tax disc and the payment receipt will be sent to the registered keeper's address currently held by DVLA and should arrive in the post within 5 working days. The SORN acknowledgement letter will be sent to the registered keeper's address currently held by DVLA and should arrive in the post within 20 working days. DDo not use this service if you have recently moved and you have not yet received the Registration Certificate in your new address. What if my vehicle's tax exempt? When you apply for a tax disc online or by using the telephone service we are able to verify your disability exemption certificate electronically with Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) www.dwp.gov.uk and the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency (SPVA) www.veterans-uk.info Your vehicle must already be registered in the Disabled tax class. If it is not, then you cannot use the online or phone service and you need to change your vehicle's tax class at any Post Office® branch that issues tax discs or at a DVLA local office. This will depend on the reason you are exempted from tax. A tax disc application or SORN declaration on our website or using the telephone service is available for some tax exempt classes. For the disabled tax class we are able to verify your entitlement to disability exemption electronically with Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency (SPVA) . What is SORN? Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) means that, by law, when a keeper of a vehicle does not tax a vehicle because it is not being used or kept on a public road, DVLA must be told. A SORN is valid for 12 months unless you tax , sell, permanently export or scrap the vehicle before the 12 months have expired. The legislation that covers SORN is the Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2002. The Vehicle Registration Number can be found on your Registration Document Certificate. Card Number The Card Number is the long, raised number on the front in the centre of the payment card. The card number tends to be 15 to 19 digits long. Payment can be made using a debit card or credit card. We accept UK Maestro, Delta, Solo and Electron debit cards and VISA and MasterCard credit cards. Security Code The Security Code is an important new security feature that now appears on the back of most credit cards and debit cards. It is a three-digit number, which provides a check of the information embossed on the card. The Security Code helps validate that the customer actually has the payment card in his or her possession and that the payment card account is legitimate. The code is only printed on the card and it is not contained in the magnetic strip information nor does it appear on sales receipts or billing statements - you must have the card in your possession in order to use this code. Issue Number The Issue Number is on the front of the debit card. The Issue Number tends to be one or two digits long. It is required for most UK Maestro and Solo card transactions. If there is no Issue Number shown on your card you can leave the box blank. Please do not enter a zero if you have no Issue Number. Email Address An email confirmation for this application will be sent, if an email address is provided. Mobile Number Enter your mobile number using only numbers and + and - characters. How do I know which band to license my vehicle in? Goods vehicles are taxed according to their "Revenue Weight". This is the confirmed maximum weight (i.e. gross weight or gross train weight) for vehicles that are subject to plating and testing. For non-testable vehicles, the revenue weight will be the maximum weight at which a vehicle can lawfully operate under construction and use limits (i.e. the design weight). Construction and Use Regulations and the Road Vehicle (Authorised Weight) Regulations must be met. The only exception is where a Section 44 Order is made by the Secretary of State which gives a general or specific dispensation from construction and use requirements. For further advice on the banding structure you should refer to the Rates of Vehicle Excise Duty leaflet (V149). |
